#BinibiniBiyernes: Marielle Caparros

For The Lakambini's #BinibiniBiyernes feature today, we have Marielle Caparros (@mariellecaparros) a 21-year old tattoo artist (@inkedbymars) and graphics designer who sometimes paints portraits as a side hustle. She promotes believing in your capacity and doing everything with love, passion, and commitment.

Do you think there's still an ongoing stigma in the field of body art/tattoos?

"Yes! Besides being asked “How will you get employed with those tattoos?”, “You’re a catholic girl, why get a lot of tattoos?” I have also received A LOT of “You’re just destroying your body”, and I always answer them with this: 1.) It’s my body, my choice and I can do whatever I want with it. 2.) My tattoo doesn’t affect my capacity to do what I love, and 3.) I love my body. I would never do something half-hearted just to “do it”.

Did you know that you were going to be a tattoo artist when you were younger? What/who are your inspiration/s?

"No. It never crossed my mind. Though I’ve always wanted to fill my body with art when I was younger, I just didn’t think I would one day ink people’s skin. I entered this field with the thought of helping my family financially and it did. I got my first tattoo set & materials gifted to me by my sister’s boyfriend, my Kuya Jiro, who believed in my skill and encouraged me to pursue this field. And I’m really grateful for him ‘cause I saw what else I can do with my skill. I have always looked up to Ryan Ashley from Ink Masters. She’s so talented and so good with what she does and I would be super happy if one day I can be like her."

How does being a Filipina reflect in searching your meaning in life?

"Your nationality should never be a hindrance to your success. Filipinos are super talented and good with what they do. Just be positive with anything that you do and you’ll find happiness aka the meaning of life 😊 "

Any words of wisdom for aspiring artists who would also like to try body art?

"1. Don’t let anyone pull you down. If you like what you’re doing and you’re eager to learn, just do it.

2. Research! It’s important to research the do’s and donts before you start inking peoples skin. It will benefit you and your client in the end.

3. Be patient. Learning is a process and if you’re still starting, don’t loose your drive and just keep on learning everyday.

4. Believe in yourself. This is the most important thing in your whole life. If you start believing in yourself, you’ll get through anything."

"Tattooing can be frustrating and scary sometimes. You may have a hard time doing perfect lines, look for your style, and so on but always remember to hang in there. Give it time and just research & practice. Soon you’ll see your improvements and you’ll thank yourself for it."
